The Pioneer – Exceptional Parcel Release
The Pioneer is an exceptional Clare Valley Shiraz crafted from the very finest fruit grown by and available to the Taylor family. Each bottle is numbered and Signed, truly a Collectors item.
The Pioneer Shiraz is named to celebrate the pioneering spirit of Bill Taylor; who had the conviction to do things differently and who demonstrated the fortitude to stay on a path to greatness.
In the early days of the Taylors wine business, Bill was astute enough to recognise the emerging popularity of Shiraz. At the time, the plan was to plant most of the Clare Valley vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon but he insisted that a small block be set aside to also plant Shiraz. Well, as we now know, his foresight proved to be very correct and a generation later, this kind of determination is present in everything we do at Taylors. So the decision to craft an exceptional Shiraz to honour that pioneering spirit was made. This pinnacle wine, The Pioneer Shiraz is yet another bold step in the Taylor family’s journey to crafting fine wines. It’s made only in what are deemed exceptional vintages and in very small quantities. With our Clare Valley terroir providing ideal conditions, the intention is that this wine will not only rival the best in Australia, but stand toe to toe with the best in the world.
Colour – At release, the wine is a deep crimson red with vibrant rose, purple hue.
Nose – Fresh aniseed, hints of polished leather, dark chocolate, plum and spice with subtle smoky oak. Tightly knitted aromas unwind with aeration.
Palate – This a seductive wine with luxurious layers of berry fruit, spicy fruitcake, licorice & sweet leather. The palate is full and generous but with precision to the structure. Velvety tannins mingle harmoniously with the fruit characters. The wine concludes on the palate with a lingering finish.
The growing season in the lead up to vintage 2014 saw average autumn & winter rainfalls and temperatures in line with long term averages. The rainfall for spring was below average; however vine vigour was good due to the presence of subsurface moisture. During the first week of December there was a cool change & 16 mm of rain fell. The rest of Dec and first half of Jan were dry & warm with no heatwaves due to regular cool changes. From mid-Jan to midFeb, hot conditions delayed véraison and harvest commenced early. A big downpour of rain mid-Feb bought the hot conditions to an end, conditions were then mild with cooler than average temperatures. These cooler conditions retained acid levels and slowed sugar development, crucially allowing time for the flavours to develop. The mild conditions continued through March, allowing ideal tannin & flavour development.
Post MLF, the wine was matured in a selection of AP John and Vicard finegrained American oak barrels – 40 % in new oak and the balance in a selection of one, two & three year old barrels. After 12 months a painstaking barrel selection assessment was undertaken to identify those parcels deemed as ‘exceptional’ and these were returned to barrel for a further 10 months maturation prior to bottling in May 2016.
